When the Cloud Goes Dark, Does Your Business Go Down With It?

Google Cloud's London outage is a reminder that business continuity requires more than a backup plan.

On October 20, 2026, a power-related incident in Google Cloud's London region triggered widespread service disruptions across the UK, affecting financial institutions, businesses, and public services.

Among those reporting problems were major financial institutions including Revolut, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, and Halifax. Customers experienced difficulties accessing banking applications, making payments, transferring money, and withdrawing cash.

Think about that for a moment.

Some of the world's most recognizable financial institutions experienced disruptions to everyday banking services because of an infrastructure failure at an external technology provider.

If it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.

When the Power Goes Out, the Impact Goes Far Beyond the Data Center

According to Google, the disruption originated from a power event affecting an availability zone within its London cloud region.

While Google worked to restore services, the consequences extended well beyond the affected infrastructure.

For financial institutions, downtime isn't just an inconvenience. It can mean:

  • Customers unable to access their accounts or complete transactions.

  • Interrupted payment processing and other essential banking services.

  • Increased pressure on IT teams and customer support.

  • Potential financial losses, operational disruption, and reputational damage.

  • Erosion of customer confidence in the institution's reliability.

In banking, trust is everything. Customers expect access to their money whenever they need it, regardless of what's happening behind the scenes.

The Cloud Isn't a Business Continuity Strategy

Cloud infrastructure can offer tremendous flexibility, scalability, and resilience. But moving applications and data to the cloud doesn't automatically eliminate single points of failure. And redundancy isn't simply having a backup.

It's ensuring that critical systems can continue operating when something fails.

That requires asking some important questions:

1. Where are your single points of failure?

A redundant server won't help if both systems depend on the same power source, network connection, or cloud availability zone.

2. Can your infrastructure fail over when needed?

Redundant systems should be designed, configured, and tested to take over when primary systems become unavailable.

3. How quickly can you recover?

A disaster recovery plan is only as valuable as your ability to execute it. Recovery time objectives, data recovery requirements, and regular testing all matter.

4. What happens when a critical third-party provider goes down?

Your continuity strategy must account for dependencies beyond your own infrastructure, including cloud platforms, telecommunications providers, and other essential technology partners.

Business Continuity Starts Before Disaster Strikes

At Alucid Solutions, we help organizations strengthen the infrastructure supporting their business continuity and disaster recovery strategies.

From data center consulting and relocation to infrastructure maintenance, network deployment, and redundancy planning, our services help organizations identify vulnerabilities, improve infrastructure reliability, and prepare for unexpected disruptions.

The Real Question Isn't Whether Something Will Fail

Power failures happen. Networks go down. Hardware fails. Even the largest technology providers experience disruptions.

The difference is how prepared your organization is when they do.

If your primary infrastructure went offline tomorrow, would your business keep running—or would your customers be left waiting?
