The Cisco Refresh That Sank Your Company

Upgrading a single switch may not sink your company, but one switch soon becomes twenty. Twenty becomes hundreds. Before long, what started as a routine EOSL notification has turned into a six- or seven-figure refresh project.

 

But what if much of that equipment never needed to be replaced in the first place?

 

Blindly following OEM refresh cycles across an enterprise infrastructure can put a serious—and sometimes completely unnecessary—dent in your IT budget.

 

Every year, organizations replace switches, servers, storage systems, and other IT equipment not because the hardware has failed, performance has declined, or the business has outgrown it—but because the manufacturer says it’s time.

 

OEM Lifecycle ≠ Equipment Lifecycle

OEM lifecycle dates serve an important purpose. Manufacturers cannot support every product indefinitely, and newer generations of equipment can offer meaningful improvements in performance, security, efficiency, and functionality.

 

But an OEM support timeline and the useful life of a piece of hardware are not necessarily the same thing.

 

A switch doesn't suddenly stop switching because it reaches an OEM End-of-Support date. A storage array doesn't automatically lose its usefulness. And a server that reliably supports its workload doesn't instantly become obsolete because a newer model is available.

 

Yet organizations frequently treat OEM lifecycle milestones as mandatory replacement dates.

 

Multiply that approach across hundreds or thousands of devices, locations, and systems, and the price of premature refreshes can become enormous.

 

Lifecycle Extension Can Change the Economics of IT

Extending hardware life by even a few years can dramatically alter the economics of an infrastructure environment.

Instead of replacing an entire generation of equipment simultaneously, organizations can move toward a needs-based refresh strategy—replacing technology when there is a genuine operational, security, performance, or business case for doing so.

 

Third-Party Maintenance (TPM) can make that strategy possible.

 

TPM providers can continue supporting eligible equipment after OEM warranty or support periods expire, often providing access to replacement parts, technical expertise, flexible service levels, and multi-vendor coverage.

 

You may discover that one of the easiest ways to SPEND LESS on IT in 2027 isn't negotiating a better price on new equipment.

 

It's deciding you don't need to buy it yet.
