Are You Dropping Big Bucks Just to Maintain the Status Quo?

Every IT budget has a certain amount dedicated to keeping the lights on.

Maintenance. Support contracts. Renewals. Hardware refreshes. Licensing. Replacement equipment.

Some of that spending is unavoidable. But there’s an important question IT leaders should be asking as they plan for 2027: How much are you spending simply to maintain what you already have—and what else could that money be doing for your organization?

If a significant portion of your IT budget is going toward maintaining infrastructure that is already working, it may be time to rethink where those dollars are going.

Maintenance Is Important. Overpaying for It Isn’t.

Reliable infrastructure requires support. But support doesn’t necessarily have to come with a premium OEM price tag.

Organizations often continue renewing OEM maintenance contracts because that’s what they’ve always done. In other cases, an approaching End-of-Service-Life date triggers an expensive hardware refresh—even when the existing equipment is still meeting the organization’s operational needs.

The result?

A large portion of the IT budget can get locked into maintaining the status quo rather than creating something better.

That’s where a smarter support strategy can make a difference.

Spend Less Here. Create More Value There.

Third-Party Maintenance (TPM) can provide continued support for eligible server, storage and networking equipment at a significantly lower cost than traditional OEM support.

But the real opportunity isn't simply the savings.

It’s what you can do with those savings.

Instead of spending premium dollars to maintain existing infrastructure, organizations can redirect portions of their IT budgets toward initiatives that deliver greater business value.

That could mean:

  • Improving network redundancy and business continuity

  • Strengthening cybersecurity

  • Modernizing wireless infrastructure

  • Expanding automation and AI initiatives

  • Improving employee and customer technology experiences

  • Funding strategic cloud or data center projects

  • Upgrading truly mission-critical equipment

  • Investing in technologies that support growth

The same IT budget suddenly has the potential to accomplish a lot more.

Not Every Dollar Deserves the Same Priority

One of the biggest opportunities in IT budgeting is recognizing that not every piece of equipment requires the same support strategy.

Mission-critical infrastructure may justify premium coverage. Other equipment may be perfectly suited for a lower-cost SLA or Third-Party Maintenance. Some hardware may still have years of useful life remaining despite the OEM's recommended refresh cycle.

The goal isn't to spend as little as possible.

The goal is to stop overspending in areas that aren't producing additional value.

A hybrid maintenance strategy allows organizations to align support levels with the actual importance, risk and lifecycle stage of their equipment rather than applying the same expensive approach across the entire environment.

Make Your 2027 IT Budget Work Harder

Before automatically renewing another support contract or approving another manufacturer-driven refresh, take a closer look at what you're actually paying for.

Ask: Is this expense improving our IT environment—or simply preserving it?

Because every dollar spent maintaining the status quo is a dollar that can't be invested somewhere else.

Reducing unnecessary maintenance costs doesn't have to mean sacrificing reliability. With the right support strategy, it can mean maintaining the infrastructure you need while freeing budget for the technology your organization actually wants to build next.

Don't just ask how much IT will cost in 2027. Ask how much value you're getting from every dollar you spend.
